Book Description

Real estate developer Doug Sutherland thinks it is just going to be another sweltering summer day in Chicago. As a desperate Sutherland collaborates with an ambitious reporter and his calculating sister in a pursuit strewn with murder victims, he soon finds out that trusting the wrong person can lead to dire consequences.

Book Review

As Doug Sutherland is just about to start his new project of re-development, a body of alderman Danny Delaney is found inside one of the crumbling Greek columns.   As he is investigated, it takes him on a journey back through his past.

The building in question belonged to his dad who mysteriously disappeared 15 years ago along with a substantial amount of money.  This leads to a trail of political corruption throughout the powers of Chicargo from businessmen, politicians and some members of the police force.

As Doug tries to clear his Dad's name he locates certain documents and tapes which implicate the real culprits, as he approaches these people he puts his life and the life of his the sister of a murdered reporter, who is helping him, in danger.

Who can he trust, as everyone he looks to for help has a hidden agenda or is either linked or has been bribed by the murderers.  Each time he gets closer or receives information, the informer ends up dead.  Can Doug find out the truth?

The characters and the position and power they hold are current with the modern day and they way they act and respond to their fear are well described.  This was a good follow up to the first instalment, The Lagarto Stone.  I actually enjoyed this more than the first book as it was more believable and the actions of the bad guys reflected the power, corruption and the hold that certain individuals had over influential peers.

Why should a man lift a finger-much less risk his life-for a mother who abandoned him as an infant? But when a mortally wounded Mexican passes Doug Sutherland a scrawled note, he must overcome resentment and phobias to save her, recover a priceless pre-Columbian artifact, and battle a ruthless smuggler.

For Sutherland, a thirty-something Chicago entrepreneur, the note is meaningless. The warning that his Mexican mother is in danger puzzles him. Even if it is true, why should he care? She deserted him thirty years ago. Besides, his life is already complicated by his relationship with his girlfriend, a deadline for his real estate project, and a recent rash of nightmares. In these vivid dreams, a "burning man" stalks him, then he's trapped in a small space, and thrown into an icy grave.

Doug tries to convince himself that the message was meant for someone else. But then his apartment is invaded, he receives threatening calls from a Mexican smuggler, the police accuse him of drug dealing, and a DEA agent harasses him. Sucked into a maelstrom, he must fight-or become a victim.

Book Review

When a young man turns up at his office carrying a message from his mam, Doug Sutherland's life is turned inside out.  Not only is the young man fatally wounded but Doug hasn't spoken or seen his mam for over 30 years.

In tracing the young mans movements and actions it turns out that he has deceived a Mexican smuggler who has a lot of influence and power.  The Mexican smuggler is determined to find out where his contraband has been hidden and thus threatens not only Doug Sutherland but those he holds dear.

On the way to trying to find out what the Mexican wants and keeping himself alive, Doug is taken on a trip to his past and he finds some of the answers to his dreams.  Why did his parents split up?  Who is the 'burning man' who haunts his dreams?  As he gets closer to his mam and the Mexican, all is revealed.

A really intriguing storyline, although I did have to read some parts a couple of times to grasp what was going on.  Once established and I was back on track I thought the aspect of one greedy individual who wanted everything for himself and either destroyed or controlled everyone that got in his way was a very current topic for today.  Wouldn't it also be nice if something happened to us all, so that we could also solve the answers to all our questions and our demons.

I found the book refreshing that the author was actually testing the reader, as a thriller I enjoyed the story and am now looking forward to reading the second in the series, Death's Crooked Shadow, as I know what to expect from the author I will be taking my time in order to fully enjoy the read.

World Book Night - We've Been Selected plus Authors Choose Extracts to be given away with their work

Stephen King picks Hesh Kestin and Terry Pratchett adds GK Chesterton to accompany their novels in million-book giveaway

Terry Pratchett would like us to sample GK Chesterton, Iain Banks is pushing Alan Moore and Roald Dahl's estate is keen on Sarah Waters. The authors chosen to be part of World Book Night on 23 April, when 1m books will be given away for free, have picked the books they themselves would recommend to readers – with Stephen King's ringing endorsement of obscure American crime novel The Iron Will of Shoeshine Cats as "the best book you never read" leading a British publisher to pounce on it.

From King's Misery to Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, Pride and Prejudice to The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella, each of the 25 titles to be distributed in April by 20,000 volunteers is now also set to include a sample extract from another title selected by its author. King's pick of Hesh Kestin's The Iron Will of Shoeshine Cats – he calls it "The Godfather on laughing gas, or Catch-22 with guns … witty, sexy, thrilling, and all story" – will see two chapters of the book included in the back of the 40,000 copies of Misery distributed in April. Publisher Hodder & Stoughton couldn't miss out on the chance and has just acquired Kestin's 1960s New York tale about a college student who meets a notorious Jewish gangster, published in America in 2009 but previously ignored in the UK, for release on 12 April.

King might have plumped for a recent novel to promote to readers, but other World Book Night authors are hoping to push older titles. Martina Cole has chosen an extract from Graham Greene's Brighton Rock, Kinsella is pushing EM Delafield's The Diary of a Provincial Lady and Ishiguro is hoping readers will be intrigued by Stefan Zweig's 1938 novel Beware of Pity. Further picks mean Jeanette Winterson's Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit will be sampled in Dodie Smith's I Capture the Castle, Jorge Luis Borges's The Aleph in Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist and Ann Patchett's State of Wonder in Emma Donoghue's Room.

"The idea is really very simple," said World Book Night chief executive Julia Kingsford. "World Book Night is all about encouraging people to embark on a reading journey and we believe that you're never more vulnerable to your next read as you are when you've just finished a book. We are really excited at the prospect of being able to put another great book into the hands, hearts and minds of new readers the minute they've finished their WBN book. Asking our World Book Night authors to recommend something seems like the perfect way to introduce new books and writers to readers and encourage people to keep on reading."

The award-winning poet Don Paterson has also chosen a Shakespeare sonnet for each book – themed "as much as possible" around each individual title – which will be printed in the books to mark Shakespeare's birthday, which coincides with World Book Night. Pride and Prejudice will feature Sonnet 116, "Let me not to the marriage of true minds / Admit impediments"; Donoghue's story of imprisonment is matched with Sonnet 133, "Me from myself thy cruel eye hath taken"; and The Remains of the Day with Sonnet 73, "In me thou see'st the twilight of such day / As after sunset fadeth in the west".

About the Author

Jeane Rhodes, Ph.D., is a licensed professional counselor using sandplay as her primary therapeutic tool She teaches online for Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. She formerly served as associate editor of the Journal of Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health, and worked in the foster care system as a therapist and in various management capacities. She has also been a yoga instructor, active in local, national, and international yoga organizations. Her masters thesis, titled AMind Made Visible: Psychotherapeutic Application of Yoga Asana,@ brought this experience with yoga into her psychology studies. Interest in pre- and perinatal psychology led to interviews with young children regarding their birth memories. Research continued with her Ph.D. dissertation, which explored the prenatal expression of yoga postures and subsequent echoes in the body of prenatal and birth experience. On a very personal level, she was a teen parent herself and brings the emotional reality of that experience to the creation of The Birth of Hope.

Imagine the shock of finding, at the age of fifteen, in foster care and having had your first ever sexual encounter, that you are pregnant.  Already been stigmatised by society as a no-hoper following your eldest sister who was already into drugs and on the road to ruin, along with a mother who has been into prostitution, drugs and serving a prison sentence.  Scared and feeling lonely, where do you turn?  

Tasha is shocked to find, after their initial despair, her foster parents support her and most of all the boy who got her pregnant, Justin, wants to look after and marry her.  Justin, only 17, is also in foster care and wants to protect her and his baby.  As the couple are both in foster care there is a lot of involvement with other people and meetings with the governing bodies to find out what is the best course of action for their life changing event. 

The pregnancy journey is full of ups and downs, not just having to cope with the growth and development of their baby but also having to deal with the complex issues with other family members as well as their foster parents.   The development stages and feelings experienced by the young couple as they go through the process is intensive and emotional.

As you follow the pregnancy you will cry, laugh, feel elation and an air of fear.  The book will change your views or make you think a lot more about seeing young girls who are pregnant, it will also give you a good insight into how young mothers feel. 

I thought the book was well written, both from a high amount of research undertaken and from personal experience and was very in depth.  It took me on the journey with the young couple and I would recommend that any young person should read this book to help them through pregnancy or help prevent them becoming pregnant.

A Small Gift with a Big Impact !!

Keychain heaven is just a click away......

When I was given the chance to review a product from WholesaleKeychain.com I jumped at the chance for two reasons really.  The first being it was a nice change from my book reviews and secondly my son is going through an absolute keychain collector phase at the moment.

 What I didn't realise was just how many different keychains there would be to chose from on their website.  It is simply amazing, they have anything from automotive, sport, Disney, multi-tool, digital to even flash drive keychains.  You name it they have the keychain you are looking for.

For me, my first search was for a butterfly keychain, one of my passions, not only did I find one but a crystal one, another passion of mine, so I was very happy.   Now to pick one for my son, here started the problem as there was sooooo much I could have picked for him.  I wanted to get him something different, unusual, something that would interest him.  Here is what I picked for him out of the huge games keychain collection although I could have picked anything from Battleships to Operation!!

What did surprise me when I received the keychains was the quality of both of them, for the tic tac toe keychain there was none of this cheap plastic that you see elsewhere, the clasp were strong and had finger wheels at the side of each square for easy movement.  The packaging for the butterfly keychain was so nice I've included a photograph, it even had a tiny butterfly in the middle of the ribbon.
